📋 Reserve margin describes the difference between an insurer's carried loss reserves and the actuary's best estimate of ultimate claim costs, expressed either as a dollar amount or a percentage. When carried reserves exceed the best estimate, the margin is positive — often called redundancy — and when they fall short, the margin is negative, indicating a potential deficiency. This cushion, or lack thereof, is one of the most closely watched metrics in insurance financial analysis.
