The global financial crisis of 2008–2009 and the COVID-19 pandemic both triggered simultaneous adverse movements across asset classes and insurance lines that were assumed to be largely independent. This tail-dependence problem has led actuaries and regulators to place greater emphasis on stress testing and scenario analysis that challenge benign correlation assumptions, ensuring that the covariance adjustment does not create a false sense of security about an insurer's resilience.
