DefinitionA product family within a business line (Home, Motor, Travel).

🛒 Product line is a family of related products within a business line: home, motor, and travel inside personal lines, or term life and whole life inside protection. It is the most granular level of the standard insurance taxonomy, the point where classification meets an actual product a customer buys. A product line bundles the variants of one proposition, so a motor line spans third-party and comprehensive cover, while the levels above it group by risk type and management responsibility.

🧩 Companies use product lines to organize pricing, product development, and marketing: launches, guarantee changes, and repricings happen product line by product line. Audited accounts rarely reach this depth, stopping instead at segments and lines of business. Investor presentations, market studies, and internal management reporting all descend to it when the story requires: motor claims inflation, say, or growth in travel cover.

📌 In a document taxonomy the product line completes the ladder: business unit for who runs the operations, business segment for what kind of risk, business line for the book within the segment, product line for the product family itself. Tagging content at the right rung keeps analysis clean, since a statement about motor pricing should not be filed as a statement about all of property & casualty. The lower the rung, the more concrete the fact, and the shorter the distance to the customer.
