📏 Underlying earnings per share divides underlying earnings attributable to shareholders by the weighted average number of shares outstanding: the per-share expression of an insurer's preferred recurring-earnings measure. UEPS or underlying EPS for short, it inherits every definitional choice embedded in underlying earnings and adds a denominator of its own.
🔁 That denominator is where the metric earns its keep. Buybacks lift it with total earnings unchanged; issuing shares or selling a profitable unit pulls it down; diluted variants add shares from convertible instruments to the count. Per-share targets therefore test capital allocation as well as operating delivery, which is why groups that anchor strategic plans on the metric (AXA being the most prominent, with underlying earnings per share growth at the center of its plans) commit to buybacks that neutralize disposal dilution so the per-share trajectory survives portfolio change.
💹 Everything the equity market prices is per share: valuation multiples, dividend cover, total-return arguments. A multi-year growth commitment on this basis compresses underwriting performance, investment results, and capital management into one trackable number, subject always to the caveat that the numerator is a company-defined measure whose exclusions deserve reading.
