DefinitionA line of business within a segment (Life, Health, Commercial lines, Personal lines).

🧵 Business line is a subdivision within a business segment: commercial lines and personal lines inside property & casualty, or life, savings, and health inside life & health. Also written line of business, the term names the level at which insurers price, manage, and discuss their books, between the broad segment and the individual product. A results presentation that says pricing rose in commercial lines while personal motor stayed competitive is talking at this level.

📂 Lines exist because risks within a segment still differ enough to demand separate management. Commercial and personal property-casualty share accounting treatment but differ in customers, distribution, pricing cycles, and claims behavior; within life & health, protection, savings, and health run on distinct economics. Regulators formalize their own versions: Solvency II prescribes standard lines of business for European reporting, and US statutory filings do the equivalent, so line-level data supports market statistics and cross-company comparison in a way ad-hoc splits cannot.

🎯 Line-level commentary is where results narratives become concrete: rate hardening, loss trends, and growth initiatives are line phenomena before they aggregate into segment figures. The vocabulary nests: a business line sits inside a business segment, and product lines sit inside the business line. The nesting is worth checking rather than assuming, since each company draws these internal boundaries itself and shifts products between lines when it reorganizes a portfolio.
