Similarly, regulators examining whether rating factors like credit score affect premiums through legitimate risk proxies or through socioeconomic pathways that raise fairness concerns rely on mediation analysis, including the NIE, to adjudicate unfair discrimination claims. By isolating indirect effects, insurers and regulators can make more precise, evidence-based decisions about product design, pricing fairness, and loss prevention strategies.
